Project Details

Created a children’s book called The Naughty Tiger. It is based on Bangladesh folklore of a tiger, a Brahmin, and many other characters to ask if doing a good deed leads to consequences.

The Purpose

As a first-generation Bangladesh-American, I heard many fables and folklore from Bangladeshi culture. From all the stories I heard, I noticed that there is a lack of exposure or modern retelling for these stories. This made me want to create a retelling of my own and have it physically published for others and for future generations in my family.

The Process

With a wide selection of stories to pick from. I narrowed down my option to The Wicked Tiger by Upendrakishore Raychaudhuri, this fable was from the 1800s before Bangladesh was formed as its own country and had a lot of opportunity to create a cast of characters while being short enough to fit in 36 pages. I developed a storyboard and character design to flesh out more of the story.

Illustrations

After planning and layout out the characters. I went to incorporate the elements I designed into full-spread illustrations. These illustrations comprised the goal of using patterns, and bold colors to represent Bangladesh art. While having fun by being messy and coloring between the lines as a reminder that this is a book for kids.

Deliverable

After completing the illustrations, I placed them in the script and formatted the layouts into an 8in x 10in the book. Formatted a copy to integrate with the illustrations and had fun taking steps to make this book a reality.

Over time I adjusted for physical print through Amazon, becoming an independent published 7 X 10 Large Print Children’s book.

The Results

With the success of independently publishing and crafting a book inspired by Bangladesh folklore, I was able to create a piece that to this day is being shared among family and part of my Bangladesh community with their children and many future generations to come.
